Alan Sepinwall, a critic on Hitfix, did an excellent job moderating the panel and ensuring that both the series and the revolutionary Kickstarter film were explored through the night. Before the panel began, fans were treated to the documentary on the making of the Veronica Mars Movie, serving primarily as a love letter and a collective thank you to the 91,585 fans who funded the project. The panel continued to dote on the fans through the panelist’s heartfelt thanks and assurances that they felt a responsibility to make the fans happy with the film.

The panel included creator Rob Thomas as well as stars Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring, Enrico Colantini, Ryan Hansen, Percy Daggs III, Chris Lowell, Tina Majorino, and Francis Capra. Fans could access the event from home through a live stream and can still catch the panel through the Paley Fest’s website if interested.

Here are some of the highlights from the panel:

- The Kickstarter was actually supposed to launch a year earlier, but Warner Bros. got cold feet. Thomas was unsure if the project was ever going to be made before the head of Digital Distribution at Warner Bros. championed the film. The Kickstarter kickoff video was filmed over a year before the actual launch date and was kept a secret from some of the other cast members. Thomas didn’t want to get anyone’s hopes up.

- Jason Dohring forgot what day the actual Kickstarter was launching, until Ryan Hansen reminded him with a text.

- The cast members clearly get along, with Capra doing a brilliant imitation of Dohring and Daggs cracking jokes about his involvement in the film.

- Bell believes that Veronica Mars will still remain salient to fans despite the fact that Veronica has grown up. She thinks that although some were attracted to the salaciousness of the events that the teenage private detective got herself into, she emphasizes Veronica’s wit and character as the main attraction.

- Thomas considered having Veronica be a FBI agent in the film, however decided against it as he wasn’t sure how he could pull in the other beloved characters. If the failed spinoff series with Veronica as a FBI agent had been on the air, it is doubtful that we would have seen any of the other original series characters.

- Thomas admitted that the character of Dick stuck around simply because “I loved having Ryan Hansen in the show so much” which may have been a blind spot.

- Dohring and Bell credited their chemistry to an intangible factor with Bell theorizing that perhaps it was because “wounded birds recognize other wounded birds.”

- Bell was the first actress to audition as Veronica and Thomas was blown away by her. He said he knew he had a star as they shot the pilot in two pivotal scenes: when Veronica wakes up after being raped and when she imitates Inga’s German accent on the phone.
